How to Enable the Screen Reader and Accessibility within Courses

Within this article you will learn how to enable the screen reader for your courses should you need this! An example of a screen reader is Windows Narrator which is built into the Windows operating system. (This is our recommended screen reader) It is really simple to activate this, please search for your chosen narrator in this instance we are using Narrator. Once you have selected this, please select "Ok" on the below screen. Then proceed to load up a Bob's Business course, after opening this use the TAB key to find the "Start" button and select "Enter". If it is working you will see a yellow box around the content you would like the screen reader to narrate. After starting the course, use the TAB key to navigate through the content and the arrow keys to highlight the text you would like to read. Once you have done this it will highlight the content with a blue box and if you then select ENTER it will read the text back to you. To proceed to the next slide keep selecting TAB until you hear the NEXT button. If you have any other specific requirements, please email support@bobsbusiness.co.uk, and we can look into this for you. Below you can read our full statement on accessibility- We are not currently fully compliant with the WCAG 2.1 AA standard across every area of the system and the content. All new functionalities and content are assessed to the standard however we are slowly working on legacy components to meet the standard as they are updated. We do fully support screen readers and other accessibility options and we always ensure that any accessibility related issues are considered in the same way as 'bugs' and as such are dealt with as a priority. Bob's Business support both WCAG and Section 508 accessibility guidelines wherever possible when developing course materials. The majority of the courses we develop are tab-friendly and should work with the latest versions of the NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, and TalkBack screen readers. BB are however aware that some courses, namely the gamified courses, are not suitable for use with screen readers, however, these are alternatives to our standard courses which are accessible to all. As we know that there are many different hardware and software aids that enable accessibility, BB are always open to working with clients on working through any accessibility issues that are found in line with our SLAs.
